Erin Carlson is a Pittsburgh based fiber artist creating out of her home and workspace called Red Cottage Fiber Studio. She is primarily a needle felter and a weaver. Her work is inspired by a lifelong love of the natural world and narrative. Long before discovering fibers, she was drawing and painting backyard plants and animals, but needle felting wool transformed her craft and she began sculpting the same familiar muses in three dimensions and on different scales. Recent work has focused more on the narrative potential of felted characters.
Red Cottage Fiber Studio is surrounded by significant native plant, ornamental, and vegetable gardens which are also an art form. Erin has been involved in experimental regional flax growing and participates in the Rustbelt Fibershed One Year, One Outfit program focusing on the use of local raw materials for garment construction.
