SPRING 2017 TEEN CLASSES


Theatrical Performance CH02 Ages 9-15 
In this 8-week course, students will learn what goes into producing a full-length play. From learning performance and acting techniques to stage design and casting, students of all skill levels will work as an ensemble to discover the joy of live performance. Students will also learn and develop rehearsal techniques and professional etiquette- skills necessary to becoming a successful young actor. Students will celebrate the culmination of the class with a performance of their play for families and friends.

Teen Improv Theater TN03 Ages 13-17 
Have you always felt like you were meant to act or perform? Are you already into theater and you want to get better? Do you want to be a better listener, speaker, teammate, or just have more fun? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then this improv theater class is for you! Designed especially for teens by theater professional Annie Harder, this course will help you build confidence in theater and everyday life!

Anime and Manga Exploration TN04 Ages 13-17 
Welcome to the fantastic world of Anime and Manga animation! In this class, students will explore classics such as Astro boy, Speed racer, and Studio Ghibli films while learning all the skills necessary to create their own set of characters and flesh out their own worlds. Instructor Jayla Patton emphasizes proper industry drawing techniques that promote consistency in a variety of styles. Come join your peers, learn to draw, and have fun!

Teen Ceramics TN05 Ages 12-17 
Clay is unlike any other material. It is unique in the way it feels, the stages it goes through, and the way it transforms when it's fired. If you are curious about exploring the possibilities of this humble material, this course is a great way to get started. Students will learn introductory approaches to working in clay, beginning with hand-building and moving on to wheel throwing. Several projects will be completed throughout the course, but it is your creativity that will make them unique.

Teen Drawing TN06 Ages 13-17 
Come join your friends and become a better drawer! In this relaxed and friendly studio setting, students will explore a wide range of drawing exercises to learn principles of composition, value, perspective and design. Designed for all skill levels, this class will cover fundamental drawing techniques and principals with room for playful and creative projects as well!

Sound and Music Studio with Garageband TN08 Ages 11-14 
Ever wonder how your favorite movies get their amazing music and sound effects? Using Garageband software, students will learn how to produce cinematic sound effects and music for films. Students will learn state of the art recording and microphone techniques as they create their very own Foley sound studio and bring short animations to life!

SPRING 2017 TEEN WORKSHOPS


Exploring Art Nouveau TN01 Ages 11-14
Inspired by natural forms, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers, Art Nouveau was an art movement that inspired artists for generations. Students will learn about the ornamental, decorative, and luxurious style of Art Nouveau artist Gustav Klimt and his amazing use of floral design and pattern. Students will be inspired by Klimt's detailed patterns and gold and silver color palette as they learn to make a scratchboard artwork of their very.

Fiesta Cuisine TN07 Ages 11-14
Join Chef Nick for a trip south of the border and learn how to create some authentic Mexican cuisine using the freshest ingredients. Chef Nick will guide students through some of his favorite from-scratch recipes which including chicken fajitas, tacos, fresh guacamole, fresh salsa, Spanish rice, and taco pasta salad.

Tree Ring Sculptures TN09 Ages 11-14 
Join artist Vanessa Rossi as she teaches you some of her most exciting and funky art techniques. Inspired by a tree's beautiful rings, students will make their very own 3-d painted sculptures using real tree disks to disply at home! Using pottery wheels, students will learn to paint on tree disks as they spin on the wheel to create a psychedelic naturalistic look. Think tie dye meets Jackson Pollock!

Pierogis, Ravioli, and Pot Stickers TN10 Ages 11-14
Pittsburgh is famous for its pierogis, but did you know that the pierogi has cousins from all over the world?
Join Chef Kate Jeffe as she teaches students how to create pasta dumplings from three very different parts of the world: Italian ravioli, Chinese pot stickers and, of course Pittsburgh's famous Polish inspired Pierogis all from scratch using the fresh and authentic ingredients.

Pies! TN11 Ages 11-14
You've heard the expression "as American as apple pie", but did you know that virtually every culture in the world celebrates some version of the American classic? Join Chef Jeff Berkowitz as he shows students how to create pies from around the world including homemade crust and filling recipes using fresh and authentic ingredients. This course will cover single and double crusts, and sweet and savory pies!

Photography: Past and Present TN12  Ages 13-17
For this teen workshop, students will learn how to create 19th-century physical photographs from images from your smartphone! Learn the alternative photographic processes cyanotype and Van Dyke brown - processes popular in the 19th century which are used today for their beautiful tones and painterly quality. Learn to create digital negatives, coat your own photographic paper, expose, develop, and tone to create photographs just like the professionals. Please bring a variety of your own photos on a hard drive or USB. Smartphones photos will work too!

Poetry Box TN13 Ages 11-14
Poetry is an art form as old as language itself. Words have the power to move and inspire, and no one understands that more than young people who may be discovering poetry for the first time. Artist Teresa Duff will guide students through activities that combine the impact of visual art and poetry to create a sculpture using their favorite poems. Students should bring printed copies of words and poetry that inspire them. These will be used to create the artwork itself.
