Students will also have the opportunity to learn the instructor’s own impressionistic style and original technique of knife painting based on the generous application of buttery oils and their manipulation through rapid addition and subtraction of paint using knives and other tools. MATTING & FRAMING TECHNIQUES
DR03
Ages 16 & up

Do you have a print that you want to frame? Do you love the look of professionally framed artwork, but hate the price? In this introductory workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of basic mat cutting and picture framing for home or professional presentation. You will receive a “hands on” education on how to properly cut mats, mount art and assemble a frame. Common questions about framing will be addressed such as framing standards, matting/framing design and selection, and conservation framing. You will learn a single mat, double mat, floating mat and a surprise contemporary alternative. By the end of class, students will learn how to get that professional look and pay half the price! Two professional mat cutting tools will be made available; however, students are encouraged to bring their own if available. A materials fee is included in the tuition and will cover basic white and black mat boards, mounting tapes and backing boards. Students should bring a pencil, yardstick, and an 8” x 10” - 11” x 14” piece of “art” (a replaceable image is advised for beginners) with them on the first day of class.

PAINTING FROM OUTDOOR SCULPTURE
PA04
Ages 16 & up

Inspired by the University of Mexico's Wilderness Studio courses and the natural outdoor sculptures produced by artist/sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, this dynamic workshop combines sculpture, photography and painting while working both outdoors and in the studio. The final project is a painting that is unique to each student's experience. A materials list will be sent at the time of registration.

On the first Saturday:
Students will meet at Sweetwater for a presentation on the process and techniques used to create a painting through this method. The class will then leave to meet at a local park in Sewickley, where each student will work on building his or her own small, temporary, sculpture arrangement from found natural materials. Students will then photograph their sculptures.

On the second Saturday:
Students will work in the classroom to choose one photograph of his or her outdoor sculpture and will then transfer the image to a painting surface by tracing or drawing. Then, students will fill in the transferred image with a painting media (watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc.) to create a unique painted image.

Lunch break:
Students should bring a bagged lunch for a break on each Saturday. The movie "Rivers and Tides" (documentary on artist Andy Goldsworthy) will be screened in the classroom during the break on both days.

Instructor: Tara Zalewsky
Time: 2 Saturdays, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Dates: August 7 - August 14, 2010
Members: $90
Non-members: $105
