Summer Camps
Sweetwater Center for the Arts offers weekly, half-day and full-day summer camps for ages 3-17 in the visual, performing, culinary and literary arts. Every week is a new adventure as children and teens explore various themes and art forms. Summer camps run from June 14-August 13, 2010. On the first day of camp, please go to the upstairs lobby for camp check-in.
All campers must have a Permission Form/Medical Waiver on file before they may participate in camp activities. These forms will be mailed to campers prior to the camp start date.
If you register your child for one morning camp and one afternoon camp in the same week, you may sign up for the supervised lunch ($10/day; lunch is not included) at the time of registration. Camp participants (ages 4-15) who are not accompanied by an adult and wish to stay in the building between camps must sign up for the supervised lunch. Supervision is provided by a Sweetwater instructor or staff member.
Supervised lunch registration must be made at least two business days prior to the camp start date in order for arrangements to be made. Please contact the Education Director for questions regarding the supervised lunches.
Due to food allergies, Sweetwater does not provide snacks or lunch. Snack breaks will be taken during both morning and afternoon camps, so parents should provide a snack, drink or lunch for their children. Snacks and drinks may also be purchased in the Sweetwater office.
Drawing Mania

Ages 6-10
It is important to start with the basics to ensure successful artistic expression in any medium. Children will draw animals, a self-portrait, cartoons, and a still life while developing drawing techniques and learning basic line and perspective principles. Experiement with pencil, charcoal, colored pencil and pastel. There will be no end to what can be created with the foundation gained from this camp! Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Cartooning Summer Camp

Calling all young cartoonists! Bring your imagination and sense of humor! This class will introduce children to the history of cartooning with a focus on character design and concept. Students will learn how to draw basic human structures using simple shapes and will learn how to draw comic book characters in a variety of positions, expressing an assortment of emotions. Children will use their limitless imaginations as they create their own cartoon characters and comic strips/books while developing drawing techniques. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Cooking With Flair: Regional Favorites

Ages 6-10
Students will learn cooking fundamentals while preparing popular regional cuisine. Camp includes lessons in food safety, knife skills, reading and following recipes and working in various areas of the kitchen such as saute, pastry and grill. Recipes will include pierogies, grilled stickies and “Pittsburgh” style steaks. Students are asked to bring a cutting board and a chef’s knife for class. Please label your child’s materials with permanent marker. On the last day of camp parents are invited to join their child for the last hour for sampling. Aprons will be provided unless students choose to bring an apron from home. Please send a small snack and beverage to class with your child. Due to the nature of this camp, Sweetwater is unable to accommodate food allergies/dietary restrictions.

Sculpture For Kids

Ages 6-10
Come see why clay isn’t the only thing you can use to make sculptures! A sculpture is a three-dimensional form created by carving and shaping a soft or hard bodied material to create a work of art. In this camp, children will learn how to create art as a three-dimensional form through the basics of scultpure such as relief, mobile, kinetic and freestanding sculpture. We’ll use materials such as paper, clay or plasteline, wax, wire, plaster, soap stone, concrete, etc. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Science, Naturally!
Exploring Art & Nature at Fern Hollow Nature Center
Full Day Camp

Ages 7 - 10
Visit Fern Hollow for an exciting week of adventure as campers hike trails, view insects and study nature. Campers will spend the mornings creating various art projects utilizing materials found in nature and will be taught by veteran Sweetwater instructor Sally Oberdick. Children will make a birdbath, a nature collage and will participate in a scavenger hunt.
In the afternoon, campers will get to experience the wonders of nature from a scientific point of view. Learn how a bird flies while building an air rocket! Make your own “Tall as a Tree Tower”. Campers will learn about different areas of science each day including physics, chemistry and physiology. We will look for examples of scientific principles out in nature then spend time with lots of hands-on experimentation.

Junkyard Treasures

Campers will create sculpture out of found objects, and in the process, learn the principles of design including color, shape and texture.Students will also create a spontaneous sculpture—which involves no planning—seeing what happens as they go. For inspiration, students will be introduced to the work of famous sculptors all of whom used found objects in their work. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Live Animal Art Summer Camp-NEW PROJECTS! RETURNING STUDENTS WELCOME!

Ages 8-12
Sweetwater is partnering with the Animal Rescue League of Pennsylvania’s Wildlife Center in this exciting camp for kids! Each week, a different animal will be brought to class including spring animals: snakes, an American crow, a barrel owl, a striped skunk and a porcupine.* Students will learn about the habitat and characteristics of each of these creatures and will then reproduce each on in a different medium such as relief sculpture and fabric construction using techniques inspired by the works of Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock. Tammy Frech, Wildlife Educator at the Wildlife Center, will attend several classes as a guest instructor. Materials fee is included in the tuition. *This list of
animals is based on their availability from the Animal Rescue League. If a particular animal listed is not available at the time of class, a different animal may be substituted.

Asian Adventure

This camp will focus on different techniques used in making art in China, Philippines and Japan. We will use various media - watercolor, ink, paper cutting, printmaking - and even look at the sculptures from these countries. Students will have the opportunity to study and be inspired by various examples of art from these countries. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Art & Adrenaline

FUL DAY CAMP!
Sweetwater Center for the Arts and the Sewickley Valley YMCA are collaborating to offer this new unique day camp program,
focusing on the strengths of both organizations. In the morning, campers will participate in a variety of art activities such as
painting, cartooning, drawing, etc…lead by a veteran Sweetwater instructor. In the afternoons, the campers will participate in
swimming, outdoor games, themes, songs and hikes lead by the YMCA’s staff. This camp will be held at the Community Activity Center at the YMCA. Melodia Musical Theater Workshop

(Children entering grades 2-6 in the fall)
This intensive summer camp experience will introduce students to creative dramatics, scene study, dance and basic vocal techniques in an age-appropriate way. In the past, children have performed shows by Disney and current children’s movies and musicals. Students will rehearse and perform for family and friends, showcasing the skills they have acquired throughout the week.
This year for the first time, Sweetwater is offering an optional backstage component to the Musical Theater Workshop. This component is offered to ages 9-12, and will be incorporated into the daily program. Children will be exposed to scenery design, lighting, make-up, costume design and training in the art of how to be a stage hand.
Scripts will be emailed to students in the beginning of July. Parent involvement is strongly encouraged, and those parents who are
interested in volunteering to help with costumes, props, scenery, etc. should notify Sweetwater at the time of registration. There will be script read-throughs and music run-throughs on Saturday, July 17. More information will be sent at
the time of registration. Please wear comfortable clothing, soft, rubber-soled shoes and bring a tape recorder that you, the student, can operate. Please also bring these items with you to the camp on Monday, July 19.
Camp begins on Monday, July 19. Campers will meet from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. each day through Friday, July 23. Students with
solo performances may be required to arrive early or stay late to practice; parents will be notified of any changes or addition to the
schedule. Dress rehearsal times will be determined. Please bring your own snacks and drinks.
The performance will be held at Sweetwater on Saturday, July 24, from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served after the performance.
