SPRING 2017 CHILDREN'S CLASSES


Children's Ceramics CH01 Ages 7-11
Nationally recognized ceramicist Angela Biederman will guide students of all skill levels through a fun filled exploration of clay and all of its amazing properties and capabilities. Students will learn various handbuilding techniques and wheel throwing, as well as sculptural ceramic techniques and surface decoration. Students will also learn about glazing and the kiln firing process.

Theatrical Performance CH02 Ages 9-15
In this 8-week course, students will learn what goes into producing a full-length play. From learning performance and acting techniques to stage design and casting, students of all skill levels will work as an ensemble to discover the joy of live performance. Students will also learn and develop rehearsal techniques and professional etiquette- skills necessary to becoming a successful young actor. Students will celebrate the culmination of the class with a performance of their play for families and friends.

Acting Fundamentals: Improv Theater CH03 Ages 5-8
This class provides young students with a supportive place to jump into the world of acting. Through improvisational theater concepts, Pittsburgh improv instructor and performer Annie Harder will help your child build the confidence, communication skills, and empathy needed to excel in the world of theater, and in life. Whether you have no stage experience or you have your theater future mapped out, this class will provide a space for you to hone your theatrical skills.

Comic Book Making 101 CH05 Ages 7-11
Children are invited to come learn the art of cartooning and making comics with Pittsburgh illustrator and comic book expert Jayla Patton! Students will study popular characters and create their very own while learning to draw them consistently by breaking down complicated forms into basic shapes. Students will learn the necessary vocabulary, storytelling skills, and comic page construction in order to make a comic book of their very own!

Toy Stories for Kids CH07 Ages 7-11
This two-class workshop will engage students in the basics of story creation and stop-motion animation. Using their favorite toys, kids will learn to storyboard the basic outline of a short film, build characters and sets, and choose a scene to film and edit using a tablet. Students are encouraged to bring in a couple of their favorite small toys, dolls, or action figures to be part of the movie! Devices will be provided for this course.

SPRING 2017 CHILDREN'S WORKSHOPS


The Great Hot Air Balloon Ride CH06 Ages 7-10
Let your imagination soar as we learn about the science and beauty of hot air balloons. Students will learn introductory drawing and painting skills in order to create a life-like hot air balloon in their chosen design and colors. Finally, students will weave a basket and add other collage elements to their paintings to bring their hot air balloons to life!

Beautiful Birdhouses CH08 Ages 7-10
It's spring time, and that means that our feathered friends have moved back into the neighborhood. Students will learn to customize their very own wooden birdhouses using paint and decoupage techniques. Once we're done, students will create a birdhouse collage inspired by their new creations. Join us for this unique and creative celebration of all things spring.

Just Like Me CH09 Ages 7-10
Come celebrate the things that make you unique by learning how to create a miniature standing sculpture of yourself! First, students will practice their portrait drawing skills to capture their likeness then learn to transfer their observations to sculpture. Students will dress and accessorize their sculptures using colorful fabrics, buttons, and ribbon. Lastly students will choose an object to attach with wire to add a kinetic action to their sculptures such as throwing a ball, walking a dog, or flying a kite!

Pies! CH10 Ages 7-10
You've heard the expression "as American as apple pie", but did you know that virtually every culture in the world celebrates some version of the American classic? Join Chef Jeff Berkowitz as he shows students how to create pies from around the world including homemade crust and filling recipes using fresh and authentic ingredients. This course will cover single and double crusts, and sweet and savory pies!

Tulip Festival CH11 Ages 7-10
May is the month for tulips. All over the world, folks will be celebrating their favorite colorful flowers. Join us at Sweetwater for a spring celebration of our own! Students will use a variety of methods and materials to create several different projects including a tulip bracelet and a painted Dutch field of flowers using a vanishing point and perspective.

Kids Pizza Party CH12 Ages 7-10
It's time for everyone's favorite: Pizza! Come hang out with your friends and learn how to make your very own bambino sized pizza pie. Students will make their very own pizza dough from scratch, mix up a batch of homemade sauce, and explore all kinds of variations of toppings, including taco pizza. Students will also learn to make their favorite dipping sauces including garlic dipping sauce and buttermilk ranch dressing.

Maker Workshop: Rube Goldberg Edition CH13 Ages 8-12
Exploring science, engineering, and art, students will tinker and build whacky and complex cause and effect machines to perform simple tasks by utilizing everyday household objects. Inspired by Rube Goldberg's classic contraptions, students are sure to have a blast while they demonstrate STEAM concepts.

Tea Time! CH14 Ages 7-10
It's tea time! Join Chef Kate Jeffe as she teaches students how to prepare some traditional and not-so-traditional delectable goodies fit for British royalty. Students will learn how to prepare the most scrumptious British Tea sandwiches, sweet scones, fresh fruit kabobs, and sweet cake pops this side of the Atlantic. And of course tea!

Paper Bead Jewelry CH15 Ages 7-10
Did you know that paper can be used to make very solid and intricate objects? Artist Teresa Duff will teach students how to make their very own fashionable and beautiful beads out of recycled paper. This eco-friendly workshop will teach students all about the art of resourcefulness while crafting trendy bracelets and necklaces for themselves, friends, and family.

Musical Robots CH16 Ages 8-12
Welcome to the future of music and art! Learning easy and fun software, along with basic building and engineering skills, students will learn to code while building and scripting a musical robot to carry out specific tasks.
